Väinä
The Kalevala is
Finland´s national folk epic, a great work compiled by Elias Lönnrot
from folk poetry telling of the life and disputes of the peoples
of Kalevala and Pohjola. Wise old Väinämöinen
dominates the Kalevala, and the blue Väinä range of
bags is named after him. The models embody the primitive strength
with which, according to the Kalevala, a duck hatches the world from golden eggs.
material
The material used for our bags was
originally rescued from the flooring of a Stockholm fashion
fair. We found some walkway carpeting in a rubbish skip, and after washing,
printing and some clever design work converted it into shoulder bags and
handbags. This lucky carpeting has thus made the transition
from under your feet to over your shoulder, a home for your precious bits
and pieces.

"Väinämöinen
was incensed. He started singing, and his songs were no nursery rhymes.
As he sang, the lake water started to rage, the earth to shudder, the
crags to crumble, the rocks to crack apart.
Joukahainen, Aino´s brother suddenly saw his sledge sink into a
pond, his whip fly into the sea, and his horse turn into stone at the
water´s edge through the power of Väinämöinen´s
singing. His sword turned into a flash of lightning, his bow into a rainbow,
his arrows into shimmering hawks.
So sang Väinämöinen. And Joukahainen sank down waist-deep
in a bog."
